Our Challenges

Heavy use has taken a toll

After more than 50 years of service, the Brooklyn Center Community Center faces many structural challenges and mechanical system problems that limit the ways residents and visitors can use the facility.

As a result, the community center is not providing the recreational activities, community programs and events that residents and users say they need.

  • Structural needs

A wide range of infrastructure problems can’t be addressed with basic maintenance and repairs.

    • Deteriorating facilities and a leaking roof

    • Gaps under the front doors where water and critters can enter

    • A lack of storage for fitness class equipment, tables, chairs and play equipment

    • ADA accessibility issues

    • Old, dysfunctional locker rooms

  • Mechanical issues

Aging equipment and other systems are impacting air quality and limiting the types of activities the community center can support.

    • Failing HVAC and pool filtering and return systems

    • Aging sound systems and projectors

    • Outdated kitchen equipment

    • Fitness equipment that needs replacement

  • Space limitations

The community center’s lack of space and antiquated design severely limits the programs and activities it can support.

    • Inadequate space for additional classrooms and community programs

    • No space to support additional fitness activities

    • A lack of meeting and event spaces available for the community to rent

    • No dedicated areas for teenagers in the building or in the community at large

    • No sports courts or indoor walking areas
